Last year, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, however, could coincide too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a tailor-made persona of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” Russia from disorder. While he is called a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this identical story rather than debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist shaped by destiny. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged Putin to take the job. The presidency was effectively a casting call with no shortage of candidates. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the events stated the primary requirement was controllability and loyalty, not strength.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by the actor's arrival as 007. The grittier version led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

With Jude Law, an star popular with viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is signaled through portraits or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it might seek to question.
