A Danish man has been convicted of sharing sexually explicit segments from copyrighted films and TV series on the social media platform Reddit.

According to a law enforcement document obtained by BBC News, the anonymous man shared 347 video excerpts of explicit content in a Reddit group he managed, which were then viewed 4.2 million times.

The country's authorities confirm he has been given a seven-month suspended sentence for violating copyright laws.

Legal analysts say the defendant was charged under a seldom-invoked clause in Denmark's intellectual property legislation, with the judge finding that by removing the footage out of their original context, the man had harmed the performers' "moral rights".

He has also been convicted of sharing more than 25 TB of copyrighted data.

From March 2022 to mid-2023, the man using the alias "the pseudonym KlammereFyr" on Reddit posted sexually explicit scenes featuring over 100 female performers.

He distributed them in the forum he was a administrator of.

Per the Danish copyright protection organization The Rights Alliance (TRA), his online community had more than 6,000 members and participants were prompted to request excerpts of particular actors.

In 2023, campaigners filed the case to the police on behalf of the impacted artists, directors and production companies, which led to the forum being shut down.

Andrea Vagn Jensen, one of the performers whose nude scenes were shared in the group, explained to Danish media at the time she believed there was a distinction between appearing unclothed in a movie and being shown on Reddit.

The performer stated the uploads constituted "abuse".

'An important signal'

The defendant was arrested in fall 2024 and admitted guilty to the charges last month.

In a comment after the verdict, the head of the Rights Alliance the organization's leader remarked the outcome sent an "significant" message "indicating violations of creators' rights has consequences".

The ruling is considered unique in the country for its use of the "moral rights" section of the national copyright law, which specifies an artist's creation cannot be utilized in a manner which infringes upon their reputation.

Intellectual property specialist a legal scholar told BBC News the case was "unusual" for its focus on the damage to the integrity of an artist, rather than to them economically.

The extent to which the ruling could influence nations abroad is uncertain.

But she said there may be "more and more of these actions" in the future with the advancement of artificial intelligence, where "the sanctity of one's creative output might be compromised much more easily".
