Giants QB Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to latest criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the infamous Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league found that the Saints had rewarded players for making hard hits on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton made remarks following the Broncos' historic comeback win over the Giants. The coach remarked that the team had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Wilson-Payton Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a five-year, $245M contract.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year prior to Denver hired Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the roster by March 2024, his $37 million pay for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
