Hardline Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Voted In as Chile's Incoming Head of State.
After a definitive runoff election, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Security and Migration
Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly built on promises to combat growing insecurity and significantly reduce immigration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. During the campaign, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing camps, barriers, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the army presence on the northern border.
Within a Continental Trend
Numerous commentators view Kast's win as part of a larger conservative trend in South America, coming after this year's electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts also view it as a part of the established rotation of power between left and right governments since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Solid Majority
In spite of his sweeping electoral win, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation may hinder his plans, including a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"We have numerous things about what a Kast presidency will operate that remain unclear because he has not said the way he will do them," noted a political science expert.
The analyst continued, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see austerity policies associated with the right. However the area with much less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
