The distinctive yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us locate the footage.
We are verifying images and video circulated earlier today that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the site of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
