Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
