Offspring of Ex- South African President Jacob Zuma Refutes Terrorism Charges as Legal Proceedings Begins
The offspring of ex- South African President Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her trial in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over statements she published on social media several years back during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her parent.
A seven-day period of anarchy in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including plundering and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
The defendant has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and confronts charges of provocation to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
Context of the Case
The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and were triggered by the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a court order to testify at an investigation into accusations of graft while he was holding office.
She has consistently rejected the allegations against her, with her lawyer earlier labelling the prosecution's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently stated the accusations against her were an effort to address political grievances with her father after he established his own political party and ran against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and family-related persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.
A few of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the proceedings inside.
Her legal team has argued that the evidence presented by the state is inadequate and lacks substantial grounds for a conviction.
