Pat Bamford Joins the Blades Despite Initiating Abusive Songs Targeting Coach Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with Sheffield United only half a year following starting insulting chants directed at the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has signed a contract joining the second-tier strugglers through the winter. His seven-year time at Elland Road concluded through agreement this past summer.
One of the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead insulting songs about Wilder during Leeds' success festivities this spring. Now, the former England player will feature under Wilder as the Blades’ manager seeks to rescue the team he loves out of the drop zone.
Past Conflict Between the Striker & Wilder
The pair had history prior to Leeds earned promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign and United were defeated in the playoff final by Sunderland. The manager described the forward as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured automatic promotion while Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Looking Ahead
All appears to have been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost up front and Bamford hoping to rejuvenate his playing days.
The song about Wilder went viral this spring. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the next day.
Wilder said at the time: “Had a conversation with Patrick recently and I’ve no issue whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow professional! However I appreciated and admired him calling me.
“We had a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a half-hour chat together and he is a great person, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and accept it and that’s part and parcel of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I've got absolutely no issue. I'm fine with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Latest Career Challenges
The forward featured in 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the ex- Forest, Chelsea & Boro striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues in recent years.
