Indonesian authorities initiated an investigation when the American FDA detected Caesium-137, a radioactive substance, in a consignment of chilled breaded prawns exported by an Indonesian company.

Officials released an warning advising suppliers and sellers to discard the goods and not sell it, although the found level was far below the agency's intervention threshold. It added that the amount of Caesium-137 they had detected would not present an immediate hazard to the public.

The FDA stated: “The main health effect of concern after extended, repeated small amount contact (for example through consumption of contaminated products or liquid over a period) is an increased risk of the disease, caused by harm to DNA within living cells.”

Extensive Pollution and Medical Checks

Radioactivity scans revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not identify the twenty-one additional production facilities, but said they would immediately undergo decontamination processes carried out by the country's atomic energy authority.
