The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran
Plans for LGBTQ+ rights celebrations throughout the city during the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding unabated, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations voiced objections about a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy and City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. This coincides with the Group G match featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to prepare our city to host the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.
Legal Background of Objections
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the cultural, religious and social values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
Fifa maintains operational control over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” which explicitly includes the Pride flag. This regulation was applied at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.
- This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's proud history of championing equality.
- An artistic competition is underway to produce artwork celebrating the occasion.
- Organizers have pledged to making sure all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.
The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s most prominent communities of Iranian descent, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations from every competing country. “Our commitment is to ensuring all residents and visitors experience the hospitality, dignity, and respect that defines our part of the country,” organizers added.
