The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
After a quarter-century span, every region of California is experiencing drought conditions. This milestone follows challenging years marked by below-average rain that intensified wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Indicates No Drought
The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This change came after a period of heavy precipitation that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their long-term norms.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a climate scientist.
After Severe Systems to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in recent years, resulting in extensive inundation, power outages, and tragic losses. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were still classified as unusually parched. Heavy rains at the onset of 2026 finally erased those last vestiges of dryness.
Essential Mountain Snowfall Is Below Average
But, experts warn that being out of drought is not the same as complete water security. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.
This frozen reservoir, which supplies about a third of the state's usable water as it runs off, is an essential component for the year ahead. Hydrology managers point out that it is too early to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”
Even as the official status shows a clean slate, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health during the months to come.
