The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
