In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed slugger Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.

Deal Structure and Incentives

The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the next season and seventeen million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on award achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
• Half a million dollars for placing second or third in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for finishing fourth through 10th.
• An identical bonus for being named the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal also stipulates that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the term. Additional perks include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to play for the Chicago franchise, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a young core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a last-place season, finishing last in the American League Central but showing a notable improvement from the previous campaign.

A two-time Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, eclipsing the longstanding record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was shortened to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Despite striking out often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 homers, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

International Pedigree

Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that brought home teammates for a dramatic 6-5 victory. The next night in the final against the USA, he slugged a game-tying home run in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 championship win.

The new White Sox addition is set to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
