Extreme heat and intense bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the south-west.

These conditions come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts eastward, delivering intense heat to much of the area.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

In another part of the world, a major city was left in blackout recently after powerful gusts compromised the city’s electrical network, with falling trees bringing down power lines. The stormy weather also caused significant travel disruption at a key airport, where numerous air services were grounded. Substantial damage to power systems is expected to cause further issues as utility companies scramble to restore power to over 1 million inhabitants.

Unusual Fog Blankets Sunny Region

Meanwhile, a region known for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has endured one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, holding the mercury at a key transport hub below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by exceptional autumn rainfall that left the ground saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a weather system has brought intense rain, strong winds and even snow to a group of islands – conditions many would not connect with this popular holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the storm brought some of the deepest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, compelling its closure.

Alongside the snow, strong winds from the north buffeted the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The influence of the storm is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal conditions taking hold.
