Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Russia is scrambling to restart conversations as soon as it hears about Tomahawks." These remarks addressed earlier musings about supplying advanced missiles to Ukraine.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former US state department official, Dan Fried, commented, "The Russian leader is attempting to derail the progress toward increased pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see on Friday, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Russia to engage sincerely seem to have diminished."

The situation followed Trump had in recent days been hardening his language toward Moscow until Thursday's call with the Russian president, which the Russian government characterized as "extremely open and constructive."

European Energy Restrictions and Economic Effects

EU authorities have set a requirement for fuel importers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not sourced from Russian crude, as stated in a official guideline released on Thursday. This step is part of the EU's upcoming ban on imports of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial analysts observed that trading patterns appeared to be factoring in the potential reduction of India's purchases of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with expectations of a phased reduction, according to sources knowledgeable about the matter.

"This represents a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a big customer of Russian crude," said a market analyst, adding that crude values were steady on the trading day.

Security Situation and Energy Attacks

A massive Moscow's drone and rocket attack targeted energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing disruptions in eight regions. Ukrainian officials reported that Russia launched hundreds of unmanned vehicles and dozens of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our power facilities," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, noting that strikes affected the areas of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, central Ukraine, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Global Political Responses

Ukraine's representative to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Russia showed its true attitude to peace through the "terror" of these attacks. "The Russian government yet again opted for missiles over talks, making this attack into a clear setback to current peace efforts," she said.

Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the European Union had no choice but to build up defensive systems against Russia. Kallas announced a "roadmap" to get ready for potential conflict by 2030, featuring a new anti-drone system to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

This initiative, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working initially by the 2026 timeline and be fully functioning by the end of 2027. EU authorities aims to secure the support of EU leaders at a summit in the coming days.
